About District

Rupnagar (Ropar) is an ancient town with a history dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization. Archaeological excavations have revealed pottery, statues, coins and a rare marble seal, showing that the area was a well-developed settlement about 4,000 years ago. The town is traditionally believed to have been founded by Raja Rokeshar in the 11th century and named after his son Rup Sen.

Rupnagar later came under Sikh rule, with Hari Singh Rais establishing his state in 1763. The district has great importance in Sikh history. At Sarsa Nangal, Guru Gobind Singh Ji was separated from his family before proceeding to Chamkaur Sahib. Kiratpur Sahib is associated with several Sikh Gurus, while Anandpur Sahib was founded by Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and became the center of major Sikh historical events. Most importantly, Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib in 1699. The city remains a major religious and historical centre of Punjab.
