• Deputy Commissioner directs a review of roads constructed in the last six months.
• show cause notice issued to Executive Engineer for delay in construction of Morinda–Ropar Road.
Rupnagar, November 8:Under the leadership of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government is carrying out large-scale construction and repair work on major roads leading to Sri Anandpur Sahib, keeping in view the Nagar Kirtan and the arrival of devotees from India and abroad for the 350th Martyrdom Anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.
To ensure the quality of these roads, Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia has directed all Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) in the district to personally monitor and review the progress of road construction works.
During a meeting held at the District Administrative Complex with SDMs and Executive Engineers of the Public Works Department, Mandi Board, Panchayati Raj, and Local Government Departments, the Deputy Commissioner issued strict instructions that a comprehensive review be conducted of all roads constructed in the last six months as well as those currently under construction or repair.
Mr. Varjeet Walia emphasized that there must be no compromise at any level with the SoPs and parameters set by the government. He warned that any officer found negligent in the execution of road, street, or other development works would face disciplinary and legal action
.
Deputy Commissioner added that regardless of whether the road construction in the Rupnagar district is being undertaken by the PWD, Mandi Board, Panchayati Raj, or Local Government Department, every project — including bituminous roads, cemented roads, or interlocking-tile streets in residential areas — must be reviewed thoroughly.
He directed SDMs to submit a detailed report on all such works to his office within one week.
To maintain transparency and ensure adherence to standards, the DC also instructed that videography and photography be carried out from the start to the completion of every road construction project, with daily reviews by the concerned departmental officers.
Taking note of delays in the Morinda–Ropar road project, the Deputy Commissioner issued a show-cause notice to Executive Engineer Shivpreet Singh (PWD) and directed him to expedite the work while maintaining all quality parameters.
He also pointed out that in several areas, water stagnation on roads and streets has led to surface damage. He instructed the concerned officers to strengthen the road base with proper gravel layers and ensure adequate drainage systems to prevent waterlogging.
The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Chandarjyoti Singh, Assistant Commissioner Abhimanyu Malik, SDM Sri Anandpur Sahib Jaspreet Singh, SDM Rupnagar Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, SDM Sri Chamkaur Sahib Amreek Singh Sidhu, SDM Morinda Sukhpal Singh, SDM Nangal Sachin Pathak, District Public Relations Officer Karan Mehta, Executive Engineer (PWD) S.S.
