Mission ‘Aajeevika’ proving a boon for women in rural areas: Additional Deputy Commissioner (D)

Rupnagar, February 9: Punjab State Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), ‘Aajeevika’ is proving to be a boon for economically weak families in villages. The main objective of this mission is to help women from needy families to rise economically and make them self-reliant and under this mission, Sukhdev Kaur, popularly known as Phulkari Lady, has set an example for other women by making “Amber Collection” a success.

These words were expressed by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) IAS, Chandrajyoti Singh while giving information about Punjab State Rural Livelihood Mission.

Giving more information about the ‘Phulkari’ project Morinda, the ADC said that Sukhdev Kaur runs an enterprise named “Amber Collection” which produces a variety of products ranging from Phulkari embroidery to bedsheet sets and traditional suits to furniture and bags, she has set up a successful self-help group of her own.

She said that the aim of her enterprise, located in village Burmajra of Morinda block, is to revive the traditional embroidery Phulkari of Punjab. Along with this, she has trained 150-200 students in the skills required to make Phulkari products, placed orders with them and helped them earn their livelihood.

She said that Sukhdev Kaur conducts workshops for this art in colleges and her brand has become famous not only in Punjab but all over India for its high-quality Phulkari products. They have also participated in SARS fairs and craft fairs across the country and have gradually increased their production scale and registered higher profits. This business model of hers is acting as a model for other self-help groups in Punjab. Sukhdev Kaur’s unparalleled spirit, talent and hard work have given her a distinct identity.

ADC further said that these groups have to follow a five-point system like weekly meeting, savings, mutual transactions, loan repayment, book keeping.

Due to which this pro-people scheme has emerged as a beacon of women’s entrepreneurship in the district as well, taking a transformative initiative, she added.

She stated that under this scheme, self-help groups are formed for needy women of BPL families of rural areas. The main objective of the mission is to make the women of the villages economically self-reliant, for which the district administration is making tireless efforts to connect as many women as possible with self-help groups and strengthen them economically.
