Member Secretary PULSA conducts a surprise inspection of District Jail, Rupnagar

Rupnagar, February 2: District Judge-cum- Member Secretary, PULSA today conducted a surprise inspection of District Jail Rupnagar and interacted with inmates of both male and female wards.

On this occasion, he took a special review of ongoing NALSA Pan India campaign which was launched in all jails of Punjab on January 25, 2024.

While moving towards barrack to barrack in jail, Member Secretary, PULSA, Manjinder Singh, addressed the grievances of jail inmates and made them aware of benevolent child friendly laws as well.

While interacting with media, Member Secretary, PULSA stated that he has paid a visit to District Jail, Rupnagar following the direction of Chief Justice, Punjab & Haryana High Court and Executive Chairman, PULSA Mr. Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia. His motive was to review the Pan India Campaign and to ensure that no person under the age of 18 years remains confined in adult jail. If any person is found under the age of 18 years, his application has to be filed before the Juvenile Justice Board or concerned Courts.

He said that the objective is to ensure that a person does not remain unheard due to his under age. As per the direction of Supreme Court of India, no person under the age of 18 years should remain confined in adult jail.

He also informed that in case of any grievances, Legal Services Authority can be contacted at any time on toll free number 15100.

He said that the campaign aims at identifying potential minors confined in adult jails and their corresponding shifting to Observation Homes if they are found as minors on the date of commission of offence.

He further guided jail visiting lawyers to file applications, if any person claims juvenility. He also inspected Jail Hospital, Kitchen and Legal Aid Clinic where he addressed the grievances of inmates.

On this occasion, Member Secretary, PULSA distributed specs to 28 convicts as DLSA Rupnagar organized special eye camp for convicts at District Jail Rupnagar in last month. The list of convicts who required specs due to weak eyesight was prepared and after collaborating with NGO ACCP COPS looking glasses were prepared. Books were also distributed among others inmates of female ward.

On this occasion, District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairperson, DLSA, Rupnagar Ms. Ramesh Kumari, CJM-cum-secretary, DLSA, Rupnaga Ms. Himanshi Galhotra, Deputy Jail Superintendent, Mr. Anmoljeet Singh, Chief, LADC Mr. Rajbir Singh Rai, and Assistant, LADC Mr. Ashish Kumar were remained present.
